Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess, and is renowned for his skillful use of deductive reasoning (somewhat mistakenly - see inductive reasoning) and astute observation to solve difficult cases. He is arguably the most famous fictional detective ever created, and is one of the best known and most universally recognizable literary characters in any genre.
Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that featured Holmes. All but four stories were narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson, two having been narrated by Holmes himself, and two others written in the third person. The first two stories, short novels, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887 and Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialized novels appeared almost right up to Conan Doyle's death in 1930. The stories cover a period from around 1878 up to 1903, with a final case in 1914.

This review is for The Sherlock Holmes Collection: Slip-cased Set HardcoverI'll give this five stars for design, packaging and because it does contain the original Strand Magazine illustrations by Sidney Paget (and possibly others.) The package is, in fact, rather beautiful. But potential buyers should be aware that each of these six volumes is VERY SMALL compared to an average hardcover book - each book is the size of a small paperback (7" x 4 3/4"). I bought this collection because the print in my 1986 edition of The Complete Illustrated Sherlock Holmes was now too small and dense for my aged eyes and I was a bit worried at the size of these books when the box set arrived. Thankfully, the font used is clear and large enough for me. Might be a consideration for those readers with poor eyesight however.

Sherlock Holmes The Complete Collection edition by Arthur Conan Doyle Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
ACD wrote the Sherlock Holmes series. This was one of the first series that depicted the crimes, the detectives, the solutions and sentencing. The author was very descriptive in describing the new science of forensics testing to determine guilt and innocence. This selection is an excellent read for the genre..... ER
Though vaguely familiar with Sherlock Holmes I had never before taken the time to read the complete collection. Retirement has allowed me the time and Prime the opportunity. Needless to say I was mesmerized by each story line and the fascinating methods of deduction used by Holmes, as created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, to solve mysterious crimes. I thoroughly enjoyed the reading and instant dictionary provided for the text.
My husband and I are Sherlock Holmes fans and have been since before we were married. We've watched all the old movies, new movies, TV shows and have the hardback copy of the complete collection on our bookshelf. I was thrilled to find this on line version that I could have for my Reader! I'm getting arthritis in my hands and trying to hold that huge hard-back version is most painful!
I devoured this collection, and I looked forward to my "date" with Sherlock every day! It was so sad when I came to the end- my head now has to be back in the Real World and not in the 1800-1900's with Dr. Watson and the fabulous detective! I can see why this collection has remained so popular- it is enthralling!
I must admit I am a fan of the movies and the TV shows. Those led me to take a chance on the actual legend behind those stories portrayed in the visual arts. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's series are from a bygone era, but the narratives are clear enough to enable one to see the action. The language and the use of 'technology' common to the era make me consult a dictionary, but this is a fun read, still. I have a long way to go; I still haven't been introduced to Moriarity, or Myncroft, but I have been introduced to Irene; and I look forward to what comes next each time I pick up my .
My only complaint of this collection is that it ended! I very much enjoyed the novel/short story format as it kept me interested while enabling me to have an easy stop point for the day. It would not be possible for me to name a "favorite" story but I enjoyed all of the novels. Of thee novels I would have to pick "The Sign of Four" although I loved "The Hound of the Baskervilles" as well. Highly recommended by me!!
I am giving this 3 stars b/c the Free Link for audiobook is not readily available. I went round and round getting bounced back and forth between and Audible . Misrepresentation of product. The Sherlock Holmes series in of themselves (to read) is very good but don't count on the Free audiobook link. Seems customer service for has deteriorated in the last year or so. I think much of it is getting outsourced.
