What I love about this book, in addition to offering very practical approaches you can put to work immediately, is that it is based on significant base of experience. Not the kind of conceptual life experience that so many team managed books are rooted in but, rather, a sort of laboratory in which the authors got to work with than observe a great number of teams as part of an executive education program.Product details

This book gives insight into the pitfalls and positives of teams, and how to best make them work. I see the value of things like analyzing team members' bargaining styles even within groups of students, or family members! I understand why some groups "clicked" and others did not.

Committed Teams synthesizes years of research on the components and creation of teams into concrete, understandable, actionable frameworks to assess, reform, and develop High Performing Teams (HPTs). The topic of team creation is ubiquitous throughout many industries, yet so often the discussion and process around team creation is too shallow to ensure a positive outcome. While many have heard about, and feel confident in the development of goals, roles, and norms, this book unpacks the creation of effectual goals, roles, and norms, and provides steps for ensuring their maintenance over time. I have found that it is so easy to feel like you get the gist of creating teams, but down the line you find yourself with a team that has slowly drifted apart. This book clearly lays how not only how to create but maintain a team in ways that are immediately operational in a real life setting. Beyond providing support for the creation of new teams that I am working on, the frameworks in the book helped me to understand and explain prior experiences I had with teams that started off strong and slowly went awry. This book is truly invaluable for anyone interested in the creation and maintenance of effectual, successful, and truly high-performing teams.
An important contribution in the crowded category of books on teams. A thoughtful "how to" guide. A book that bridges theory and practice. It is substantive but not pedantic. What is distinctive here is the use of concepts and methods from cultural anthropology to better understand team dynamics. The authors address the complex and messy "process" side of building more robust and resilient "commitment" in teams. As such, this book is a complement to McKinsey's primer, "The Wisdom of Teams" with its task and business logic focus. In short, you sense the authors know this terrain, know the dilemmas, and they offer a few, much needed, tools and diagnostic checklists to navigate this terrain.
Billed as three steps to inspire passion and performance, this book is based around a fairly simple scheme, namely set a direction, stay on track and amend slightly the course if necessary. It sounds so easy, doesn’t it, yet the authors admit that our typical workday can work against us and inhibit implementing this simple plan, so they seek to help find us reach success in whatever way possible.
The authors have developed and refined this programme as part of an extensive research process and believe that it has the capability to deliver great results for team-working, allowing a powerful entity to work towards their common goals. It works by aligning team member interests to a common vision, provides efficiencies and clear areas of responsibility and leads to high-performance, powerful project execution.
It makes for an interesting read, although it felt to be a bit of a slow burner, requiring a bit more persistence and focus when reading. It evoked a sense of credibility and authority rather than relying on “fake enthusiasm” and unrealistic promises of success that many similar books tend to fall back on. The knowledge being imparted was understandable and capable of being implemented. It certainly had a good mix of theory and practice to draw you in and get you wanting to investigate further.
A book with potential and a worthy read to see if you can kickstart your project working in the future.
